Fan Script: Life's Decisions

Post by Jason on 30th September 2013, 3:43 pm

This is something I did a back. I originally titled it The Big Decision, but just now changed it to Life's Decisions. Rather than reveal it all at once I will add a scene every couple days or so. Feel free to comment and predict as to what might happen next.

EDIT: The themes in this script include peer pressure, decisions and the value of life. It is more suited for ages 14+ but is handled in a way that is relative for most ages. Keep this in mind as the story progresses.

Scene 1:

SCENE 1- INT. DONNA’S DORM ROOM– VIDEO CHAT
(DONNA BARCLAY, CONNIE KENDALL)

Video chatting with Connie

DONNA BARCLAY
Hey Connie, test. Can you see me now?

CONNIE
Yes! We got it! Wow, Donna you’ve changed a bit since we last saw each other. You have red hair now?

DONNA BARCLAY
Yeah. Well freshman year a group of
us died our hair for a campus wide
event. I decided to dye it again now
cause I missed it.

CONNIE
It does look good on you. Wait what
kind of campus wide event?

DONNA
Well it was for homecoming, a group of
us dyed our hair red, with blue tips.

CONNIE
You went along with this? That doesn’t
sound like you.

DONNA
Let’s just say freshman year was a
wild one. I’ve gotten wiser since
then.

CONNIE
What year are you now?

DONNA
Sophomore.

CONNIE
(chuckles)
I see. Care to share some of your
wisdom?

DONNA
Two things I learned from freshman
year; Think for yourself, and don’t
ride in the trunk.

CONNIE
Does this have to do with the hair
thing? Wait what was that last part?

DONNA
Let me start from the beginning and
you’ll understand.

End SCENE 1

Scene 2:
SCENE 2- INT. DONNA’s DORM ROOM- CHAT CONTINUES

(DONNA, CONNIE,  )

DONNA
(to Connie)

It started on a Friday night, I was in

my dorm room watching TV while doing

some homework. Then I got a phone call.

DONNA
(Freshman year)

I don’t know Chuck, I have some

homework to do.

CHUCK
Donna, check the calandar. It’s

Friday! It’s time to have fun. Doing

homework is what Sundays are for.

DONNA
Well, I don’t know.

CHUCK
Come on, it’ll be so much fun.

Midnight pancakes! What’s more legit

than that?

DONNA
Well...

CHUCK
And besides, with late passes, we can

be out till 2.

DONNA
Um.. Ok. I guess I’ll be right there.

CHUCK
Fantastic. Meet us in the quad in five

minutes.

CONNIE
The quad?

DONNA
(To Connie)

The quad is the very center of campus.

It’s the most convenient spot to meet

up.

CONNIE
Oh, I see. Pancakes at midnight?

DONNA
Oh yeah we go at least twice a month

now. And we make sure to get our

favorite waitress every time too.

CONNIE
So you met in the quad.

DONNA
Right. But when I got there.

CHUCK
(Freshman year)
Donna over here.

DONNA
Hi Chuck, Ted, Jesse, Vanessa, and?

CHUCK
Oh right. This is Tim, Ron, and Joe.

DONNA
(To Connie)

Chuck hadn’t told me so many were

coming; eight of us in all. But the

more the merrier is what he always

says. We made our way to the parking

lot where we had planned to split into

two cars.

CHUCK
Ok, so Ron you said you’d drive right?

Anyone else want to?

Ted
Well, you know. If we sit four in the

back, three in the front, and one in

the trunk we wouldn’t have to use the

extra gas.

DONNA
(to Connie)

Ted, Jesse, and I laughed at Ted’s

joke. But then.

TIM
I’ll do it.

DONNA
Do what?

TIM
I’ll ride in the trunk.

DONNA
(to Connie)

I was taken by surprise, and I think

everyone was. But then the trunk was

popped and Tim climbed in the trunk

with some emergency blankets as extra

padding. This was just the beginning

of our crazy night...

END SCENE 2

Scene 3:
SCENE 3 - - MORE OF THE STORY

(Connie, Donna, Chuck, Tim, Waitress, Ted, Vanessa, Jesse, Ron )

CONNIE
He volunteered to get in the trunk?

DONNA
Yeah. I wasn’t too thrilled about it

either. I told them it was a bad idea,

but no one really listened. We packed

ourselves tight into the car and

headed off.

(Freshmen year.)

CHUCK
So Ron, how fast did you say this

thing can go?

RON
Really fast.

(Chuckles)

(Present. To Connie.)

DONNA
We began speeding up, and Ron gets

crazy behind the wheel when he’s in

the limelight. But we made it to the

Pancake House in good time.

CONNIE
I bet.

DONNA
We parked, got out, and heard Tim

making all sorts of goofy noises from

inside the trunk. We all laughed. Then

we went inside.

(Freshmen year)

CHUCK
That was a blast eh Donna? Aren’t you

glad you came with us?

DONNA
Yeah, a blast..

WAITRESS
May I help you?

CHUCK
Uh, yeah I’ll have unlimited

strawberry banana pancakes.

DONNA
I think I’ll just have water.

TIM
I’ll have unlimited plain pancakes

please.

(Present.)

DONNA
We got our pancakes, and my water and then as we

were finishing up, Chuck said.

(Freshmen year)

CHUCK
So who’s gonna ride in the trunk on

the way back?

RON
I know! How about we draw straws. The

person with the shortest straw rides

in the trunk.

CHUCK
Does that work for everyone? We’re all

in agreement then?

DONNA
(Present. To Connie)

Everyone nodded in agreement. Chuck

cut one straw in half with his pocket

knife, and then mixed them all up

while we had our eyes closed. We all

grabbed for straws and...

(Freshmen year)

CHUCK
So who is it?

RON
It looks like it’s Donna.

DONNA
Oh no, no. I’m not riding in the

trunk.

TIM
It’s rather comfy back there.

JESSE
You did agree to the game.

RON
Come on Donna, don’t be a spoil sport.

CHUCK
If she doesn’t want to, than she

doesn’t have to.

TED
But she agreed to this way of settling

it.

CHUCK
Look, I’ll ride in the trunk alright.

RON
You didn’t draw the shortest stick,

Donna did.

VENESSA
If he really wants to why not let him?

It’s better than trying to convince

Donna to.

DONNA
No. I’ll do it.

CHUCK
You don’t have to Donna.

DONNA
Yes, I do.

(Present)

CONNIE
You got in the trunk?

DONNA
(to Connie)

I don’t know why I did it. But

everyone else was right. I did agree

to the game. Once the guys were

finished with their pancake eating

contest,we paid and headed out to the

car. The trunk opened and I got

inside.

(Freshmen Year.)
CHUCK
(whisper)

If you need anything just text me.

DONNA
(Present. to Connie)

Chuck was so sweet. He texted me

several times to make sure I was ok,

with Ron’s crazy driving and all.

But then.

TIM
Uh, I think there’s a cop behind us.

TED
Maybe he won’t pull us over.

JESSE
Ron, take a turn. If he follows, he’s

probably gonna pull us over.

RON
Right.

END SCENE 3

Scene 4:
SCENE 4 --INT. RON’S CAR--PULLED OVER

(CHUCK, RON, DONNA, POLICEMAN, TED, CONNIE, JANNA)

CHUCK
He’s still behind us guys.

RON
And there goes the lights.

DONNA
I didn’t know about the cop in detail

until later. But I knew something was up when we came to a stop that seemed too soon to be back on campus. As we came to a stop, Chuck texted me again with a message saying.

“Cop. Stay calm and quiet.”

My heart pounded heavily while the cop talked to the others. Hoping I wouldn’t be discovered.

POLICEMAN
Where are you headed?

RON
H-h-headed? We were going back to

campus. Uh sir.

POLICEMAN
Why the hurry?

RON
Hurry? We wasn't in a hurry.

POLICEMAN
We clocked you going at fourty in a

thirty, and you didn’t stop all the way at that stop sign, and you didn’t use your signal.

RON
Uh, about that.

CHUCK
We were trying to make curphew sir.

TIM
Gonna be tough beating that now.

POLICEMAN
(surprised)

How many you got in there?

TED
(jokingly)

Just a couple two many.

POLICEMAN
Ok, I’m gonna need your driver’s license and registration, and everyone’s ID’s. And you, I'll need you to step out of the car.

DONNA
(To Connie)

I remained quiet in the trunk for a very long time. Later I found out it was only about half an hour. I was relieved when we started moving again. The others called our resident directors and let them know we would be late. We got back to campus in a much slower manner. I winced when the trunk opened and the others helped me out.

RON
Can you believe that? That was fantastic!

Ted
Yeah. Can you imagine what he would have said if he would have looked back here? You would've got charged for much more than just you’re license plates and faulty taillights.

CHUCK
You really got off easy as it is. I mean a hundred dollar ticket for license plates and taillights pails to everything he could have charged us for.

(Present.)

CONNIE
I still can’t believe you rode in the trunk. But it is kinda funny that the police didn’t look there.

(Present.)
DONNA
I can laugh about it now, but looking back I should have known better than to give in to peer pressure. I should have been able to make my own decision.

CONNIE
We all have those moments Donna, but with God’s help we can see passed what others want us to do and see whether it’s right to do. And the thing is, we may not know the outcome of decisions right away if at all.

JANNA
Donna, good you’re here. I.. Oh I can tell you later.

DONNA
Wait, Janna. Come here. Connie this is my roommate Janna. Janna this is a friend from Odyssey, Connie.

JANNA
Nice to meet you.

DONNA
What’s wrong Janna?

JANNA
Wrong? Well.. it's not a huge deal. I can tell you later when you’re not busy.

CONNIE
Well, actually I should probably go. There's probably dishes or laundry for me to do. It was good talking to you Donna.

DONNA
Thanks, Connie. We’ll have to do this again really soon. Bye!

END SCENE 4

Scene 5:

SCENE 5 --INT. DONNA’S DORM---- THE LETTER

(DONNA, JANNA)

DONNA
What’s up Janna? You look like you won the lottery.

JANNA
I wish! But this is better than that.

DONNA
You won a gift card to Pappa Pete’s?

JANNA
No. I saw Chuck earlier and he seemed really distracted. As if something were on his mind.

DONNA
And?

JANNA
And I heard from Susan who heard from Jeff who heard from Ron who talked with his roommate, and I’ve noticed this too. You two have some chemistry going on.

DONNA
(surprised)

Chemistry? Well I wouldn’t say-

JANNA
And you got a mysterious letter in our mailbox that I wouldn’t be surprised if it was from him.

DONNA
(surpised)

A letter?

JANNA
You know a piece of paper sealed in an envelope usually having a return name but this one lacks that.

DONNA
Yes, I know what a letter is. Thanks.

JANNA
Well, aren’t you gonna open it?

DONNA
I was thinking about it, but then I remembered I have a nosy roommate.

(Laughs together)

JANNA
Can’t blame me for being curious go on. Open it.

DONNA
I’m surprised you don’t already know what it says.

JANNA
Well it’s not like I didn’t try. The light trick didn’t work, and I didn’t have time to steam it.

DONNA
(opening the envelope)

You do know that curiosity killed the cat right?

JANNA
(anxious)

Can you blame me? Just read it will you?

DONNA
It’s typed, and it doesn’t make any sense. The pizza speaks truth.

JANNA
You found a talking pizza?

DONNA
No. Well, not yet.

JANNA
Doesn’t say who it’s from either.

DONNA
It’s so weird. It must be Chuck. He’s gotta be up to something. I just wish I knew what.

END SCENE 5

Scene 6:
SCENE 6 –INT. DONNA’S DORM – MYSTERY PHONE CALL

(DONNA, JANNA)

Later.

DONNA
Janna, do you have your Calc homework? I want to see what you got on number five.

JANNA
What a character. He’s so funny! Poor squirrel.

DONNA
      (louder)

Janna!

JANNA
What? You don’t have to shout!

DONNA
Course I have to shout, you had your headphones in and so loud I could tell you what was going on if I wanted to.

JANNA
Then go ahead.

DONNA
         (annoyed)

Can I just see your math homework for a minute I-

         (phone rings)

The room phone never rings. You get it.

JANNA
No way, you get it.

(Phone rings)

DONNA
At least see who it says it’s for on the screen.

(Janna gets up. Phone rings)

JANNA
Donna it’s for you.

         (pause, picks up phone)

Hello? No, but I’ll put her on.

Here Donna.

DONNA
Hello? Donna speaking

VOICE
I’m from Papa Pete’s. I’m entering your lobby with your pizza now.

DONNA
My pizza? But I didn’t order-

VOICE
Look your Donna Barclay right?

DONNA
Y-Yeah.

VOICE
All I know is I have a pizza for you. It’s already been paid for. So if you don’t take it I get a free snack.

DONNA
Ok, I’ll be right down. Did you order pizza?

JANNA
No. Are you really going down? It could just be a prank. This is a college campus, and everyone has access to the campus phone directory.

DONNA
Maybe. But, the pizza speaks truth.

JANNA
You think it’s connected?

DONNA
It wouldn’t hurt to go down. And just see. You wanna come?

JANNA
Of course!

END SCENE 6

Scene 7:
SCENE 7- INT. DONNA’s DORM –RETURN FROM PIZZA

(DONNA, JANNA)

DONNA
The pizza was already paid for just like he said. Though he wouldn’t tell me who sent it.

JANNA
What kind is it anyhow?

DONNA
It smells like pepperoni and sausage.

JANNA
It looks like pepperoni and sausage too.Hey, look in the corner.

DONNA
What?

JANNA
It’s another note.

DONNA
Maybe this will answer some questions.

         (unfolds and reads)

Donna, I need your help with something, and I know you’re the perfect one for this. Miller’s bridge at 1:30. Please come alone.

JANNA
Miller’s bridge? That’s the bridge in the park near here right?

DONNA
Yeah. I wonder why Chuck didn’t just text me. Why go through all the hassle doing it this way?

JANNA
This is so romantic.

DONNA
You’re off your rocker Janna.

JANNA
Guess we’ll find out after church tomorrow won’t we?

DONNA
We? What we?

JANNA
Someone has to give you a ride. Right? And said driver might as well go with you.

DONNA

Said driver is a nosey, helpless romantic of a friend. I just have to go alone.

JANNA
But Donna.

DONNA
I’ll fill ya in after the meeting on what I can. But that’s my answer. Here have a slice of pizza.

END SCENE 7

Well, that's what suspence is for right? Just kidding. I'm glad you're enjoying it.

Here's scene four.

Bye!

END SCENE 4

Welp, here's scene 5.

And we continue with scene 6

Scene 6:
SCENE 6 –INT. DONNA’S DORM – MYSTERY PHONE CALL

(DONNA, JANNA)

Later.

DONNA
Janna, do you have your Calc homework? I want to see what you got on number five.

JANNA
What a character. He’s so funny! Poor squirrel.

DONNA
      (louder)

Janna!

JANNA
What? You don’t have to shout!

DONNA
Course I have to shout, you had your headphones in and so loud I could tell you what was going on if I wanted to.

JANNA
Then go ahead.

DONNA
         (annoyed)

Can I just see your math homework for a minute I-

         (phone rings)

The room phone never rings. You get it.

JANNA
No way, you get it.

(Phone rings)

DONNA
At least see who it says it’s for on the screen.

(Janna gets up. Phone rings)

JANNA
Donna it’s for you.

         (pause, picks up phone)

Hello? No, but I’ll put her on.

Here Donna.

DONNA
Hello? Donna speaking

VOICE
I’m from Papa Pete’s. I’m entering your lobby with your pizza now.

DONNA
My pizza? But I didn’t order-

VOICE
Look your Donna Barclay right?

DONNA
Y-Yeah.

VOICE
All I know is I have a pizza for you. It’s already been paid for. So if you don’t take it I get a free snack.

DONNA
Ok, I’ll be right down. Did you order pizza?

JANNA
No. Are you really going down? It could just be a prank. This is a college campus, and everyone has access to the campus phone directory.

DONNA
Maybe. But, the pizza speaks truth.

JANNA
You think it’s connected?

DONNA
It wouldn’t hurt to go down. And just see. You wanna come?

JANNA
Of course!

Scene 7

END SCENE 7

With only two scenes left. What could possibly happen?

They jumped rather quickly to conclusions.  There's no guarantee that it's about romance anyway.  Other than that, I'm not quite sure what to think.

Re: Fan Script: Life's Decisions

Post by Jason on 7th October 2013, 4:09 pm

This scene is a little rough, I spent a lot of time trying to get it just right, and then edited it some more this week. Hope you enjoy. Feedback on this scene is definitely appreciated.

Side Note/Be Aware:
This is a really tense scene. With the theme of choices one character is experiencing depression and internal sadness over a friend that recently committed suicide. He wrestles with this, and attempts to end his own life. While this is handled in a sensitive way, I realize this is a tender subject. While this warning may be unnecessary, I just thought I should throw it out there before you proceed in reading it. Please enjoy.

Scene 8:
Scene 8-- INt. JANNA’s CAR/LOCAL PARK---After Church

(JANNA, DONNA, CHUCK, TIM)

JANNA

This is about as close as I can get.

DONNA
Ok, I’ll walk back after I’m done.

JANNA
Walk? You sure? I can wait you know. Donna I was thinking maybe I should come with you. You could be meeting with anyone on campus. I don’t want you to get hurt.

DONNA
I’ll be fine. I’ll call you if I run into trouble alright?

JANNA
Well, ok. Just be careful.

DONNA
          (walks)

Great. Janna has me paranoid. I’ll be fine. She just has a wild imagination. It’s light out any way so I have that to my advantage. Miller’s Bridge, well this is it.

CHUCK
Donna?

DONNA
          (surprised)

Back off I have pepper spray and I’m not afraid to use it.

          (relieved)

Oh it’s only you. Why are you sneaking up on me like that? I nearly sprayed you!

CHUCK
I’m sorry Donna, you’re right a dodged a bullet on that one. Wait- Is that perfume?

DONNA
Maybe. I’m just glad it was you that arranged this meeting.

CHUCK
Me?

DONNA
Janna got it in my head that a crazy loon could’ve- Wait. You mean you didn’t write the note?

CHUCK
No, though I am curious how a loon would’ve responded to death perfume.

(laughs.)

I thought it was you that arranged this.

DONNA
Did you get a pizza too?

CHUCK
A pizza? No I just got a note under my door. You got a pizza? Man. I got the short end of the stick on this one.

DONNA
But if you didn’t write the note, and I didn’t write the note. Then who did?

TIM
I did. Thanks for coming Chuck.

(surprised) Donna?

CHUCK
(Interjecting)

Tim? What’s this all about?

TIM
There’s been a lot on my mind lately. And I need someone to talk to. Someone who will actually listen. The other guys would just laugh it off.

CHUCK
Ok, well here. Let’s sit on the bench over there.

TIM
You see. About a week ago I got a phone call from a friend back home. He told me that one of my closest friends died. And I’ve just.. I just.. I just can’t accept it. She wouldn’t do something like that.

CHUCK
I’m sorry Tim. I-

TIM
And then I went home last weekend for the funeral. I thought maybe it would help somehow. But all it did was confirm what I already knew. Which I guess was the idea. They say she- But she lived such a strong life. How could someone like that...

DONNA
          (tenderly)

Not find a reason to keep living.

TIM
And then this past week I found myself coming out here more and more. Gazing into the rushing water wondering why I’m still here yet she’s gone. And then I see people like you that are always happy and I wonder what you have that I don’t have.

DONNA
Tim, life is full of choices. Your friend made a choice that is permanent. It’s a choice that can’t be reversed. When you made the decision to talk to someone about this: That was way better than trying to handle things on your own.

Chuck and I don’t have anything that you can’t have. It would require you to make another choice. One of the biggest choices you ever have to make. When you choose God, you’re never alone. He can help you through any problem that ever comes you’re way.

TIM
Oh great. You’re one of them. She was too. How can I possibly decide to follow a God when..

DONNA
Tim, I don’t know you’re friend. But we can both agree that bad choices were made despite whatever the circumstances were. I’ve never really understood why God takes people when he does. But it all has it’s own reason. She may not have seen a reason worth living, but if she were still here she’d see how much friends like you cared for her.

CHUCK
You can’t blame God for the decisions that you’re friend made. She may have believed on the outside but only God knows what was going on, on the inside.

TIM
Chuck you’re a Christian too? You’ve never mentioned that before. This God can’t be the answer. I don’t know what I was hoping for, but religion sure wasn’t it.

CHUCK
There are people that can help you. The school counselor, or a trusted professor. We could come with you if you need us to.

TIM
(upset)

No, they wouldn’t help, they’d just talk. But you don’t seem to understand. No one can understand. I just can’t handle this anymore.

CHUCK
Tim, sit down. We’re not done talking about this.

TIM
I’m not sure why I asked you to come Chuck. Talking is all that we ever do. It’s all anyone ever does around here. Talking never does any good. I’m tired of talking. I’m tired of everything.

CHUCK
Tim, calm down. Think about your friends, and your family. You have people that can help you through this. Don’t do anything foolish.

TIM
I just want you to know there’s no hard feelings. Bye Chuck, Donna.

CHUCK
I won’t let you do this.

TIM
Let go of me. I’ve made up my mind!

(Tim breaks free. Jumps off bridge)

CHUCK
Call 911. I’m going in!

DONNA
Chuck NO! God please let them be ok.

(Dials phone)

Hello? Yeah, this is an emergency...
(FADES)

END SCENE 8

Jason, while I do have some slight criticism, I'll save it for later and tell you right now that I appreciate you tackling some of the rougher issues of life. I also like how you're using AIO characters because, as I've gotten older, I've wished AIO could have episodes that deal with the more mature situations in life.
