I split this topic from the modesty discussion because I thought it was interesting enough to keep talking about. Grammar seems to have fallen apart.

Maybe the Internet has made us lazy in the way we write. Maybe we talk so quickly on the internet that errors are inevitable. Or maybe, we just don't care about being accurate anymore.

I like to make sure I have good grammar and spelling, so thank goodness for spell check... I'm an awful speller, sometimes so much that it doesn't recognize what word I'm trying to type...Wink
But yes, I do believe the internet has made grammar and spelling go down the tubes...I don't believe it is totally destroyed, but lots of internet users could use a grammar class or two.

Most people know grammar well. They just are to lazy to use it properly.

I think that's another problem created by the internet: spell check.  Yes, it can be helpful (I've certainly used my fair share), but if people can just have the internet give us the correct spellings, then what happens when we (*gasp*) use pen and paper, and don't have spell check?  Kids who don't have homeschool parents who care about their individual learning needs don't have any reason to work extra hard on their spelling.  Instead of working on fixing their weakness, they just accept it as it is.

I'm OKish I guess. I don't actually use spell check so that probably helps me spell better......

We all should devote our selves to one week with out spell-check.

One thing I don't like is how we can send messages to each other instantly, so we don't pressure ourselves to write perfectly. After all, we can clear stuff up easilly and quickly if there's a problem, so we don't take time to review what we write. Because of this, I try to read everything I write at least thrice before sending. IMs are the exception, because that takes too long.

My spell check seems to be bugged, actually, it doesn't work on CC. I'm not complaining, though. Smile

I follow the eyeball rule with spelling. If it doesn't look right, look it up. I don't think I can memorize every obscure word's spelling, but if I look up something enough times, I remember it.

I think I'd do okay without spell check. I use it only to catch typos, really.

Here's something to consider for all the coders out there. You know how computer code doesn't work properly, if at all, when you mess up once? Maybe learning to write good computer code can help with English. If you're used to taking the time to write up the syntax just perfectly, every semicolon and bracket, you just might be better with capitalization and punctuation. Just a theory I have.
