Should you care about your actions being right or wrong... in video games?

Post by Sko on 1st June 2013, 11:04 am

Okay, here's an odd question that's been on my mind for a while. Is doing something in a video game as important as doing it in real life?

Obviously, killing characters or other players in a video game isn't the same as real murder. But in open ended games where you make the rules, like Minecraft and Oolite, two of my favorite games of all time, should you treat your actions with the same thought as you do in real life?

Or, should you do whatever you want?

Over the last few days in Oolite, a space simulator, I've destroyed 40-some-odd pirate ships in self defense, and unless the pilots had escape pods or space suits, it's safe to assume that in the game at least, they died.

Oolite's open ended. If I jumped through some hoops, I could have avoided almost all of those pirate attacks. But I didn't.

One thing I noticed is that every paragraph in this post starts with an "O". That's not intended. But anyways, back to the question. Should video game players care about their actions being right or wrong?

well, somewhat. I mean, it's kinda like a world, inside another world, in which people die all the time. Like halo..... It's an ok game, but it's full of killing.
(sorry if I'm not making sense, it's morning)

I think sometimes it's bad, like in the m rated games cuz it's like killing an actual person, and these guys sometimes go off and do it in real life, it's just awful

I remember hearing that parents allow violence in movies more than they allow sex, because parents don't expect their kids to be murderers when they are older. Maybe the same applies to video game ratings and content.

I think that we should definitely use caution, concerning both the content of the video game, and how much time we pour into playing it. Even though we won't necessarily be a murderer when we get older, it definitely affects the way we think.

I definitely think we should be careful in what we see, play, and hear, as much as what we do, think, and say. But, that's the thing.. It's a pattern. Everything we do, affects something else. It's the life chain. So, yeah, I play fantasy/cartoon violent games. Not too violent, but violent. I'll be the first to admit that.

Each family/person has boundaries they set and lines they have not to cross. I don't think anyone should be playing any M games. But, eE-some T games, depending on their content, are usually okay.

It depends a lot on A, the age/maturity of a person. B, the personal convictions. And C, the content of a game itself. It also depends on what lines up with the Bible and what doesn't. Granted, things like Sonic or Mario aren't exactly the story of Noah's ark, but a lot of them aren't really bad, per se. There are a couple that are questionable, but it's mostly just a bunch of goofing off cartoonism for enjoyment.

What exactly we get enjoyment out of makes a difference. If you know the difference, that's good. Like, SSB. I love that game, so does my dad. No blood or gore, just knocking a bunch of zany cartoon characters off a platform. It's really nonsense, but it's fun. Is it a basic-violence-based game? Yes. That's why it got a teen rating. But, it's nothing compared to other teen games.

Content, maturity, thoughts, Biblical line up. Usually the main thing to think about. We should always be careful. "Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are of good report. If there be any virtue, and there be any praise, think on these things".

I know, that probably was just a round about thing and makes no sense whatsoever. But, point being made, yes. We should be careful.

Thankfully we have a game rating system, that helps a lot.

I agree with a lot of what's been said so far. We do need to worry about what's in our games, and how much we accept it.

But the question still stands... should we care about whether our video game characters do what's right or not? Or should we just ignore it?

I personally think there needs to be a balance. Where that balance goes, I don't know. Personal honor and integrity does matter to me in the games that I like to play.

I dont really know, for me, i care what kind of character i play, [which, i barely play video games, btw] i wanna play the good guy who cares about people, who protects others. As i said, i like being the good guy in games. I hate killing people, cuz i feel like I'm actually killing someone. I would rather just babysit then play m games thank you! but that's my opinion

It depends I play some T rated games. I don't find a problem with killing in video games as long as you draw a line between video games and real world.

To answer the question directly, then yes, we should care about whether our game characters do right or not.

As far as the where the balance goes, I'd say it's a Romans 14 matter.

I mean no offense to anyone in what I'm saying. This is my personal belief, and I hold nothing against people who don't agree.
I don't not believe in killing games. Call of Duty, Halo, I just don't. As Eugene says in Treasure Hunt, "The implications on human life are staggering." They really are, to me. Once, I went over to my friends house, and we decided to play on her X-box. Her brother was playing some sort of killing game, not sure what is was, but I couldn't watch it. It was nauseating to me, watching him. It may not be this way for other people, and I understand. But for me...no.

I agree with that... when the point of a game is to kill people, I have to wonder what in the world the devs were thinking.

I do see a little difference between mandated killing and killing as an option. When killing is an option, I avoid it unless I'm directly under attack and defending myself. When killing is the entire point of the game, I don't really enjoy the game much.
